Golfing with Trump: Social capital and the rise of populism in the US

Golfing with Trump: Social capital and the rise of populism in the US

Please see presentation in english at the bottom of this page.

ENGLISH:

Golfing with Trump: Social capital and the rise of populism in the US

Twenty years ago, in his book ‘Bowling Alone’, Robert D. Putnam warned that democracy in the US was in peril as a result of accelerating inequality and a decline in social capital. His warnings seemed to have become reality with the election of Donald Trump as US President in 2016. However, Andrés Rodríguez-Pose argues that neither low social capital nor economic inequality can be blamed for Trump’s election. His explanation lies instead in areas of depopulation with high social capital. Support for Trump was strongest in conjoined areas subject to long-term declines in population and their economies. In those areas of the US that still maintain high levels of social capital, no-one is bowling alone – they’re all playing golf with Donald Trump.
